Photos from RSL National's post Kath Swansbra is a resident of Parkes, NSW and is aged 78. She has been cake decorating for over 30 years having swapped to cake decorating from dress making. She started by completing a cake decorating course at TAFE. This cake took Kath 3 months to complete and is a donation to Telopea Park School in Canberra. She loves what she does and hopes this important story of Villers-Brettenoux will reach school children better through her work. The cake tells the story of what happened to Villers-Brettenoux during World War 1 each side of the cake includes: Children attending to the Australian war graves in Villers-Brettenoux, the courtyard at the Victoria School in Villers-Brettenoux, the devastation of the 2009 Victorian bushfires, the plaque at Victoria school - Villers-Brettenoux, an Australian Soldier helping a French man in the rubble of Villers-Brettenoux following the war, an image of the war memorial at Villers-Brettenoux and pennies representing the money raised by the Australian children to send to Villers-Brettenoux to rebuild their school.

The Last Post magazine The Last Post last week visited Sydney and then Canberra to attend firstly a seminar on Japan-Australia Post-War Reconciliation efforts and then the RSL National Conference 2017, both held at the Hotel Realm Canberra. On the Wednesday there was also a wreath laying ceremony held at the Australian War Memorial. On Wednesday night there was a cocktail function co-hosted with the Japanese Embassy and attended by Japanese Embassy staff and the Japanese Ambassador. On Thursday at the conference, Adrian Campbell from Rotary Camberwell accepted the Seeds of Peace, Peace Prize. The DVA, represented by Simon Lewis, spoke about the need to continue a good working relationship/partnership with the RSL. The theme of suicide prevention and PTSD was visited by speakers. The wonderful Sharon Bown, Wing Commander and on the council of the AWM and author and a contemporary veteran, spoke about the challenges she faced after suffering serious injuries, as an army nurse, in a helicopter crash in 2004. Sharon spoke about PTSD and the “fear of fear”. RSL National President Robert Dick played a major role in the conference that carried the theme, Be Part of The Change. The Last Post is hoping to interview Robert soon to speak about the challenges facing today’s RSL. On the Thursday also Connie Boglis spoke about the challenges faced following the suicide of her loving partner, Jesse Stephen Bird. Her speech, Changing Times was poignant. At the Conference dinner on Thursday night, The Stilettos entertained the crowd and The Last Post met up with film maker Tom Papas, who is putting together the Veterans Film Festival in Canberra in October and Chairman of Legacy Australia, Tony Ralph and Brandnet boss Stephen Davie. Keynote speeches from RSL National President Robert Dick and RSL National CEO, Georgie Macris were well appreciated. The Last Post will keep working with like-minded souls in the RSL to make sure the organisation continues as a successful as well as transparent and modern representative for veterans of all ages. Minister Tehan and Shadow Minister Amanda Rishworth MP also attended Mel Fawcett The Last Post out NOV 3
